

Given the game’s premise - players explore an ordinary backyard after being shrunk to the size of a bug - spiders make a natural choice for enemies, but one that understandably turns some players off.

Despite what seemed like a strange fit, Grounded gained a lot of pre-release hype, aided by the marketing muscle behind Microsoft, and players were lining up to have their own Honey I Shrunk The Kids adventure on launch day. The recently acquired Microsoft studio is best known for its sprawling single-player RPGs, while Grounded is a story-light multiplayer survival game. Grounded is an odd choice for Obsidian on its face. Obsidian actually announced that Grounded would have accessibility options for players with arachnophobia well before the game was released, but players have only been able to test them out since its Early Access launch yesterday. Obsidian’s new miniaturized survival game Grounded pits shrunken player characters against towering spiders, but it also includes an Arachnophobia Safe Mode option that turns them from terrifying to almost cute.
